“I’ll invest everything. I’ll be in a worse place. And I won’t get the job.”
These are the words a downhearted sector leader said to me in a recent coaching session.
It was the reason she gave for why she couldn’t bear to believe she could get her dream job as a result of our work together.
Despite the whole programme being called Work You Love.
It was too scary. It was like tempting fate. Better to think small so she wouldn’t be disappointed.

The cost of thinking small
The problem is that her thinking was having a big impact:
- It was stopping her from truly owning the fabulous gifts she has to offer
- It was stopping her from getting out there and applying for roles in case she didn’t get them
- And it was making her job search after redundancy feel heavy and difficult. Not a great place to start.
From flat to energised in one session
“You know what,” I suggested. “Finding your dream job isn’t any harder than finding a s**t one. It just might take longer.”
This was the start of a conversation that took her from feeling “doubt, unvalued, sad and flat” to “smiley, light, empowered, energised and optimistic.” Her actual words.
It was wonderful to witness and exactly why I do the work that I do.
At the heart of the shift was my ‘T-E-A-R-S’ technique. I’ve developed this from years of working with talented and caring leaders whose thoughts were not serving them.

It’s hugely powerful – and it works.
From this new empowered and optimistic place she’s so much more likely to apply for roles she’ll enjoy and be great at. And if she’s not immediately successful she can take on the rich learning and use it to build her resilience and self-knowledge.
I have every faith that my fabulous client will find work she loves not too long from now.
And now she does too.
Want this for yourself?
Looking for a new role can be a deeply lonely and frustrating experience. Especially if your confidence has been well and truly bashed by redundancy.
My one-to-one Work You Love coaching programme gives you the space – and the tried and tested practical tools – to find your own way, with me, a cheer-leading challenger, by your side.
Dare I say it, it’s fun.
